The opioid epidemic is one of the most compelling issues facing our country, today!

Since the crisis began in the late 1990’s, more than 700,000 people have died from drug overdoses. The opioid epidemic has killed more Americans than guns or car accidents and doing so at a pace faster than the H.I.V. epidemic did at its peak. At a rate of 175 deaths a day, the total number of opioid deaths now exceed the number of American killed during the Vietnam War.

One of my top priorities will be to promote legislation that provides safer alternatives and rehabilitation for those affected.

In Florida, the opioid overdose rate has tripled since the turn of the century. According to Florida’s Statewide Drug Policy Advisory Council 2016 Annual Report, “There has been a substantial increase in deaths associated with fentanyl and heroin-related drug use.” Opioids hits everyone, it does not discriminate by age, gender or socio-economic class. Nearly every family in our district knows of someone who has been affected by this terrible epidemic. That includes my family!

There has been a substantial increase in deaths associated with fentanyl and heroin-related drug use.

One of my top priorities will be to promote legislation that provides safer alternatives and rehabilitation for those affected. I will also work hard to make sure that the pharmaceutical companies who are directly responsible for this epidemic pay for the cure and recovery of those most affected. It’s time that we elect a legislator who will fight for our community.
